SPACE4 (n). /speɪs-fɔː/
1. a co-working, training and events space in Finsbury Park.
2. a community of technology activists and social innovators.
SPACE4 is home to a community of technology activists and social innovators. We see ourselves as a hub for the proliferation of forward-thinking ideas, organisations and individuals that encourages collaboration amongst its members. We are located 2 minutes from Finsbury Park station and offer desks and room hire. We also host a wide range of events including training in digital skills and ethical business. We are community-led, and welcome your involvement and support.
SPACE4 is part of CoTech, the UK’s network of worker-owned digital cooperatives. We actively support democratic and cooperatively governed organisations, and seek to build a future where technology is a force for social and environmental justice.
We’re not your run-of-the mill serviced coworking space. Users are actively encouraged to participate and contribute their skills and time to making SPACE4 socially valuable and relevant. Our community participates actively in the governance of SPACE4, shaping how it should operate now and in the future. We use sociocracy to make decisions.
Our weekly Wednesday open lunches and wider programme provide opportunities for people to get to know each other, swap ideas, share skills and invite others in.
We offer a pay-what-you-can or payment-in-kind option for people working on social action projects, local residents and anyone experiencing disadvantage.
SPACE4 was set-up by Outlandish, a technology co-operative that builds websites and data tools for a fairer, better world. The project is co-created in particular with Founders and Coders, who run free, peer-led training programmes in web development.
We offer discounts to people who are:
– working on a project of significant social value
– working on a project that is not yet generating any or much money
– working as part of a non-profit worker co-op
– from an underrepresented demographic group in the tech industry
– have personal circumstances that affect income
– willing to pay in-kind
WORKSHOPS & EVENTS
Space4 is more than just a serviced office. We are a community of people dedicated to making the world a fairer place, and to create a supportive working environment. The space is supported by CoTech, a UK-wide network of worker co-operatives in the digital tech sector. We have some of these co-ops working here, including AR designers Animorph, web developers Go Free Range, and open data specialists Open Data Services. We also have small charities, freelancers and small businesses, most of whom are using technology (to greater or lesser degrees!) to support their social aims.
Every Wednesday we eat lunch together in the space. This is an opportunity for people to get to know each other, swap ideas, share skills and invite others in. Users of the space are actively encouraged to participate in lunches and evening events, and even to host their own. Users are also invited to join our governance committee, which decides on future strategies for Space4. For users who aren’t in a position to pay the full price for a desk, we ask them to volunteer instead to help making the space function.
